Humans built huge engines on the surface of the earth to find a new home. But the road to the universe is perilous. In order to save earth, young people once again have to step forward to start a race against time for life and death.
Film recommendation by Chris Berry, Professor at King's College London
Bigger, better, with even more spectacular special effects, Wandering Earth 2 builds on the magic of the first Wandering Earth film, which was China’s megahit breakthrough into the science fiction genre in 2019. It teams China’s biggest action star Wu Jing from the original film with Hong Kong megastar Andy Lau. In Wandering Earth 2,it is 2044 and the United Earth Government faces the challenge of an expanding sun which will make life on Earth impossible. Should it support the Digital Life Project to upload human consciousness and preserve it for eternity? Or should it support the Moving Mountains Project to build huge engines and push the planet out of the solar system? Astronaut Wu Jing and scientist Andy Lau’s affiliations both face family tragedies, and dramatic tension is ratchetted up not only by impending planetary doom but also by their struggles to negotiate conflicting family and national duty. The film is adapted from the novels of China’s first Hugo Award winner, Liu Cixin. But that doesn’t stop director Frant Gwo smuggling in a few homages to his personal sci-fi favourite, Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.
